WHAT IS A PROSTHODONTIST?
A prosthodontist is a specialist trained in esthetic, implant and reconstructive dentistry. Prosthodontists can improve your appearance by repairing broken, discolored or misshapen teeth and associated structures. Crowns, bridges, veneers, full or partial dentures and dental implants are just some of the procedures that can help you regain the health of your dentition and its appearance. A healthy smile is considered an important aspect of a person's appearance and self-esteem. A prosthodontist has the special skills needed to restore smiles to the best they can be.

Prothodontists are the team leaders, or coordinators, when a patient is involved with a general dentist or other specialists, such as oral surgeons, periodontists, orthodontists and endodontists. The prosthodontist often is involved in an interdisciplinary approach with other health professionals in a patient's treatment to develop solutions to the individual's dental needs.

After completing four years of dental school and earning a doctoral degree in dentistry, prosthodontists, like other dental specialists, obtain two or three years of additional intensive formal training in an American Dental Association Certified Training Program. On successful completion of the requirements it culminates in a specialty certificate, a Master's Degree in Dentistry (MSD), or both, and recognition as a specialist and a Board-Eligible Prosthodontist. Board certification is most important if the prosthodontist is involved in teaching at a university or in the military service. In the United States there are less than 2,700 prosthodontists.

Prosthodontists see geriatric patients, and extremely fearful and anxious patients. Patients with hypertension, heart conditions, diabetes, or any of a host of other medical conditions that constitute a high risk are routinely seen by the prosthodontist for management of their dental problems. Some prosthodontists receive additional training as maxillofacial specialists and literally rebuild lost facial structures such as eyes, ears, noses, and large segments of the face with appliances.

As a member of the American College of Prosthodontists, our commitment is to provide the highest quality of patient care, comprehensive and effective treatments and improve the quality of patients' lives. The result: a bright and beautiful smile with confidence and function!
